Science Explorations

This week, our scientists learned about predictions.  We make predictions when we are reading, we make predictions on our 100s chart, and we make predictions in science as well.  The k'ers made predictions as to whether or not they thought certain objects would float or sink when placed in a container of water:  a large pumpkin, a carnival squash, a small pumpkin, and a turban squash.

Predictions are guesses you make using the information you have, so the girls lifted the items, feeling their heft, in order to make their predictions.  Then, we did the test; we placed each one in a tub of water and watched the results... all of them floated!  We discussed how scientists make predictions and that sometimes they are correct, and sometimes they are not.  Many girls were shocked that they didn't sink like they predicted.

Once the pumpkins and squash were placed in the water tubs, each girl recorded their observations.  The girls drew how each different pumpkin or squash looked while floating in the water.

The girls observed that the large pumpkin needed A LOT of water to be able to float, so Ms. Phillips and Ms. Drosd had to fill the recycling bin with water!
