Living the Hamlin Creed

This week we finished up our work with the Hamlin Creed: Compassion, Courage, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.  To the girls, the Creed means many different things

Compassion:

"my daddy saying nice words to me"
"someone asking someone if they are OK"
"giving a hug"

Courage:

"going to school even though you are nervous"
"climbing the tallest tree at Blackie's pasture"
"crossing a bridge I am scared of"

Honesty:

"telling my mom and dad I got up in the middle of the night"
"telling my grandpa I dropped food in his car"
"telling the truth after you steal a cookie"

Respect:

"taking care of our trees"
"listening to the teacher"
"cleaning up the materials in the classroom"

Responsibility:

"cleaning my room"
"taking care of my little brother"
"getting up early"

We kept the Creed in mind when we came up with our classroom "rules" or throughlines.  We also thought about how we can help makes our hopes for the year come true:  what we need to do all together to help each other reach our goals.

We decided that it would be best to have just a few throughlines (so that we would be able to remember them) and we organized all of our ideas into three:  Respect Yourself, Respect Each Other, and Respect Your Environment.  The k'ers then decorated hearts as their promise to always try our best to uphold these through lines.
